Officials: Suspicious Powder at UVa Not Hazardous

April 25, 2013

Carruthers Hall on UVa Grounds is back open this evening, after a scare over an unknown white substance earlier today.

Around noon on Thursday a mailroom clerk noticed a white powder at her workstation.

Hazardous material crews responded to the mail sorting facility and found the powder to be non-hazardous.

The Charlottesville Fire Department says that the mailroom clerk took action even before they got there.

"She isolated herself and washed up herself," said Captain Joe Philips. "She isolated any other coworkers that were in the area into another area of the building."

No one was injured or taken to the hospital.
