The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) is cracking down on alcohol abuse at UVa.
Virginia ABC agents spoke with officials at the University of Virginia earlier this year to discuss new policies.
One policy includes increased enforcement at the bars on The Corner.
The Director of the Gordie Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, Susan Bruce, says there has been a decrease in substance abuse cases.
"Our students drink less than you might think, because we've been keeping records," said Bruce. "We've got data for 20 plus years on student drinking patterns. What we've seen is over time, students are engaging in more protective behaviors, like their talking with their friends when they had too much, or they are using ways to keep from getting intoxicated themselves. We're seeing negative consequences go down and we are seeing drinking itself go down."
ABC will offer additional sessions on how to detect fake ID's and tips to avoid serving intoxicated underage customers. There will also be additional ABC agents in the area this month.
