'Old Sam' Cannon in Va. City Focus of Fundraiser

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - An historic cannon that sits across from the post office in Fredericksburg is the focus of a fund-raiser.

The fund-raising is intended to restore "Old Sam," which is believed to be a Model 1841 6-pounder.

David James is a retired National Guard lieutenant colonel heading up the project. He tells The Free Lance-Star a fundraiser at the Fredericksburg Armory brought in about $1,200, pushing the amount raised to date to more than $10,000.

The Fredericksburg Guard Association says about $14,000 is needed to refurbish the gun.

"Old Sam" was used by local militia in parades, practices and celebrations.

The name refers to 1876 presidential candidate Samuel Tilden. He lost to Rutherford B. Hayes.
