Olympic Gold Medalist Visits UVa. Children's Hospital

March 19, 2013

An Olympic gold medalist stopped by University of Virginia Children's Hospital to help cheer up kids and remind them to stay positive.

The Jessie Rees Foundation was created by Rees, a swimmer who fought cancer but never lost her positive attitude.

Olympic gold medalist and ambassador for the foundation, Matt McLean, visited the UVa. Children's Hosptial on Tuesday. He gave the kids Joy Jars filled with toys to help remind them to never give up.

"The reactions are really hard to put into words," said McLean. "Sometimes, kids, especially the younger ones can be a bit overwhelmed, but then the middle and older kids, they can really appreciate it. I think it's nice for them to sometimes have something to take their mind off what they usually focus on."

The Jessie Rees Foundation keeps Jessie's legacy alive by providing Joy Jars and hope to sick children all over the world.
