One Man Arrested in Fatal Hit and Run, Police Offering Reward for Information on Second Driver

April 15, 2013

Albemarle County Police arrested one man Monday in connection to the deadly hit and run that killed a Crozet man Easter weekend.

Joseph Wade Payne, a 20-year-old from Buckingham, has been charged with felony hit and run. Police say Payne was driving along Route 250 near Brownsville Road when he struck 71-year-old Carroll Donald Herring. According to police, Payne fled the scene but officers noticed his vehicle nearby and escorted him back to the scene of the crash.

Police say Herring was hit by two vehicles while crossing the road around 7:45 PM on March 29. Investigators are searching for the driver of a dark colored Saab model 9-5 with front end damage that could have been involved. Police are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest of the second driver. Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 434-977-4000.

Payne is being held at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail. A bond hearing is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
