PVCC Honors Veterans with Ceremony

Student and employee veterans were treated to a breakfast and ceremony at Piedmont Virginia Community College Monday morning.

After the marching of the colors by the American Legion Color Guard, Albemarle Pipes and Drums played a military tribute.

About 150 veterans attend PVCC. The college has ramped up its services to veteran students with a new, grant-funded advisor position.

Jacquelyn Fisher, a veteran herself, is the new military and veterans advisor. She is able to meet with veterans as soon as they apply to the school. Fisher helps students form an academic plan, register for classes and informs them about receiving benefits and financial aid.

"Because the military culture is so unique, it's helpful to have someone like myself, who is a veteran, who's lived that lifestyle, to be able to help them and guide them," Fisher said.

PVCC was one of six schools to receive the competitive grant from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. The grant is for one year and totals about $67,000. The money will also help pay for other outreach services.
