Authorities say a paramedic has died after falling from an overpass in northern Virginia while responding to a vehicle fire.
Arlington County police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck says the paramedic, 33-year-old Joshua Weissman, died Thursday afternoon at Washington Hospital Center.
Weissman, of Bristow, was a seven-year veteran of the Alexandria Fire Department. He was called Wednesday evening to the overpass on Interstate 395 in Shirlington. Police say he fell off the roadway and into Four Mile Run Creek, about 20 feet below the highway.
Fire officials say the last time an employee was seriously injured while on duty was 15 years ago.
