NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Passenger rail service is returning to Norfolk.
Amtrak trains will begin traveling between Norfolk and Washington, D.C., on Wednesday. It is the first time Norfolk has been connected to intercity rail service since 1977.
State officials said during a ceremony at the Norfolk station on Tuesday that they hope the route will be frequented by members of the military traveling between the region's numerous bases and the Pentagon. The interstates between Norfolk and Washington are usually heavily congested.
Weekdays, the train will leave from the station at Harbor Park at 4:50 a.m. and arrive in Washington at 9:44 a.m. On weekends, the train will leave Norfolk at 6:05 a.m. and arrive at 10:55 a.m.
Discounts are available for veterans, active-duty military and their families, senior citizens and AAA members.
