A 22-year-old Atlanta man has been arrested by the Nelson County Sheriff's Office for allegedly assaulting two people on an Amtrak train Thursday morning.

Sheriff David Brooks says his department and the rescue squad were called at approximately 8am about an unruly passenger. They boarded the Amtrak Crescent 20 train when it stopped in Shipman on James River Road (Route 56).

The suspect, identified as Barrett Wolfe, allegedly assaulted a woman with two children as well as an Amtrak employee. Police did not release what provoked the attacks.

“He was severely taunting passengers. He’d already assaulted an employee and a passenger before officers arrived. An Amtrak employee was found lying down in the train with injuries when we got on the scene,” Sheriff Brooks told Nelson County Life.

The employee was transported to the University of Virginia Medical Center for treatment.

While in the Sheriff's car Wolfe kicked out both rear side windows. He was arrested on eight charges: three counts of felony assault on a police officer, two counts of misdemeanor assault and battery, felony property damage, felony escaping and misdemeanor resisting arrest.

The train continued to its final destination of New York after the arrest.

I know Barrett and he is "a creative sweet guy", but I believe he needs psychological help. The worst thing a judge could do would be to make an example of such a nice kid with emotional problems. He needs help and medication. He is an incredibly talented photographer and to jail him instead of helping him would be a travisty.

Barrett is my cousin and he DOES NOT have a mental illness. I believe he was not in the right state of mind. He is young and for whatever reason made wrong choices. He is really a wonderful, creative, sweet guy. I feel terrible for anyone that was involved, but just to set the record straight, he is not a crazy person.
