The Heritage Theatre Festival has been at the University of Virginia all summer and another show is about to hit the stage. "The Marvelous Wonderettes" is a musical that is filled with iconic songs from the 1950s and 60s.
Renee Dobson, the Director of "The Marvelous Wonderettes", said, "The Marvelous Wonderettes is a trip down memory lane."
Carly Hueston Amburn, one of four performers in "The Marvelous Wonderettes" playing the role of Missy Miller, said, "It's four best friends in high school. It starts at their senior prom in 1958 and then in the second act is their ten year reunion in 1968."
Emelie Faith Thompson, one of four performers in "The Marvelous Wonderettes" playing the role of Cindy Lou Huffington, said, "Anytime you have a group of four people, you are going to have different dynamics."
Amburn continued, "Anytime you have a group of four people, you are going to have different dynamics."
The show is an audience interactive experience. Once you walk into the theatre, you are handed a ballot. It has all of the people running for prom queen listed. At the end of the first act, the winner will be announced.
You could even be pulled on stage as an extra.
Dobson said, "Two teachers chaperones at the prom and those two teachers are selected from the audience to do that and interact with them as well during the show."
All four of the performers have a tie to Central Virginia in some way. The toe tapping, funny musical will take you back in time, reminiscing of a different era.
Thompson said, "It's the 50's and it's their senior prom and it's about all of the fun in the work. The 60's are a little groovier and grittier subjects."
Dobson said, "I'm hoping that they just come and are able to walk out humming one of their favorite songs from this era."
The performances start Tuesday night and run through August 3rd. To find out more information on the schedule and tickets click here.
