Many people have been planning their Thanksgiving meals for days, maybe even weeks. But while all the effort goes into the big day, they can't go unfed the day before the holiday.
While they prep the turkey, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie for Thursday, many people turned to another kind of pie Wednesday night -- pizza.
"Tonight we'll probably do two times or more our regular volume," said Brian Washington, owner of Vocelli Pizza in Albemarle County.
Washington says he doubled his staff Wednesday night to prepare for the crowd.
Mark and Michael Klausner made a stop at Vocelli's Wednesday night to pick up enough pizza to feed 29 people. They're visiting from Baltimore for the holiday.
"It's the pre-Thanksgiving pizza dinner. So, once a year we show up and get a lot of pizza," said Mark Klausner.
It's a family tradition.
"When everyone arrives, we just have a big party with all the cousins," said his son, Michael Klausner.
It was all hands on deck at Domino's on Stewart Street as well.
"We see a lot more carry out customers, a lot more deliveries," said Luke Wray, general manager and operating partner.
The store also had twice as many employees out and about Wednesday to cater to those wanting a day off from the kitchen.
"You're at home, you're cooking for tomorrow. The last thing you want to do is cook for tonight," said Wray. "People think of convenience. They think of fast, good customer service, and that's what we're all about."
Washington says he expects Sunday to be a busy day for his shop as well, as people return home from their travels.
He also says the day after Thanksgiving used to be one of their slowest days of the year. Now, it's one of the busiest.
He says that's because many businesses order pizza to feed their staff serving all the bargain shoppers on Black Friday.
