A local theater group raised money for a new home from grocery shoppers.
Play On! Theatre held a fundraiser Wednesday night at Whole Foods in Charlottesville.
People could pay for a ticket that allowed them to taste a variety of foods and drinks inside Whole Foods. They could then sit outside the store and listen to Play On! Members play guitar and sing. All of the money from each ticket went to Play On's Emergency Relocation Fund.
The theater group is looking for a new home because its landlord is not offering the group a new lease. The group currently pays a fixed amount for rent in the IX Building, located a few blocks from the Downtown Mall.
The aim of the theater campaign is to raise at least $20,000. Play On! has raised about half of its goal so far.
"We're about halfway towards our goal, which is great, but we still have a long way to go. So, this event has been really helpful in helping us meet that goal, and we're still, fingers crossed, [hoping] that we'll get what we need to get the relocation moving forward," said Devynn Thomas, the Producing Director of Play On!.
Thomas added that Play On! is run solely by volunteers.
