Plow & Hearth Reopening After January Fire

October 3, 2013

Nine months after an electrical accident caused a fire at Plow & Hearth at the Barracks Road Shopping Center, the store is ready to reopen to the public.

Shoppers will notice new window displays, higher ceilings and about 40 percent new product.

Customers will be able to return to the store Friday for a soft opening.

On Friday Oct. 11, the store will host its official reopening.

"We're going to do a formal ribbon cutting. That entire weekend we're going to do a 'Name That Bear' contest for our bear mascot, we're going to have special offers, we're going to have a Dansko trunk sale, and a lot of other activities going on," said Plow & Hearth president John Haydock.

Even though they lost nearly everything in the fire, Plow & Hearth is still giving back.

One dollar from every transaction will be donated to Service Dogs of Virginia during the grand opening weekend.

"With additional funding, we can train more dogs to help more people," said Service Dogs of Virginia executive director Peggy Law. "It costs us about $40,000 to raise and train and then place each dog, so it's an expensive proposition, and the more funds we have, the more dogs we can place."
