Charlottesville police say this time of year they see an increase in burglaries. And what you put on the curb could tip off the thieves.
Police say the boxes at the end of your driveway can show a criminal exactly what fancy gifts are inside your home. However, what tempts them even more is social media updates saying a family will be out of town.
Police say a simple Twitter message or Facebook status update about leaving the area can signal to criminals that it's a good time to target your home.
They say the best way to guard your home while you are out of town is to tell your neighbors to keep an eye on your house. You may even ask them to park one of their cars in your driveway to make it appear like someone is home.
Police also say you should recycle your Christmas gift boxes right away.
