Police: Drivers Need to Slow Down in Road Construction Areas

March 29, 2013

Drivers along the Route 250 Bypass are not adjusting to the new lower speed limits, according to Charlottesville Police.

Police speed guns showed that some drivers were nearly doubling the new 25 mph limit. Police want drivers to watch out for dump trucks and construction workers on the ground.

"Most of the motorist are traveling about 35 which was the speed before," said Lt. Ronnie Roberts with Charlottesville Police.

Police say they want drivers to adjust to the new speed limit.

"We've committed to ourselves, the project team, as well as the public to have a safe project record," said Development Services Manager, Angela Tucker.

The city wants a record with no accidents involving pedestrians, drivers, and workers. City staff working with the project say the new construction could be a distraction to some drivers, which is another reason to keep the speed limit low.

Police say, paying attention is key and that the project is only in it beginning stages, which will become larger.

"And of course if you are caught speeding in highway work zone once we begin the initiative of doing the enforcement activity, that could net you a ticket of up to $500," said Roberts.

According to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, if caught speeding at 20 mph over the speed limit, six demerit points will go on your driving record.
