An 84-year-old Albemarle County man is safe Wednesday night after taking a walk in the woods and getting lost, all with the heat bearing down.
It happened on Chestnut Ridge Road in a neighborhood just off Route 20 in Albemarle County north of Charlottesville.
Police say the man called his wife when he got lost in the 90-degree heat. A team of nearly a dozen searchers using all-terrain vehicles and K9s began looking for the man shortly after noon.
The heat and humidity were top concerns for searchers, but they were able to maintain cell phone contact and find him.
"These situations -- I've been in this job 15 years -- and I've seen them come out happy and I've seen them come out sad," said Cpl. Chuck Woycik with the Albemarle County Police Department. "I don't want to see any sad outcomes."
In the end, the man was in the heat for nearly four hours. Police said they found him in "good" condition.
