Police Investigating Fatal Bicycle Crash on Walnut Creek Trail

The Albemarle County Police Department is investigating a fatal bicycle crash which occurred at 2:43 pm on Saturday, July 26, at Walnut Creek Park.

Police say the victim, 50-year-old John R. Potter of Charlottesville, was riding a mountain bike with a friend on a designated mountain bike trail at the park. According to police, Potter appears to have fallen from the bike and struck an object, likely a rock, which resulted in a traumatic and fatal injury.

Investigators say Potter died at the scene, and foul play is not suspected.

Both Potter and his friend were experienced mountain bikers, and both were wearing helmets.
