Virginia State Police are investigating a three-vehicle accident that killed three people on Interstate 81 in Smyth County on Wednesday.

Officials say a tanker truck hauling gasoline overturned when the driver swerved and the load shifted. The truck slid into a pickup truck, exploded and then hit a highway crash cushion truck. All three vehicles caught fire.

The tanker truck's driver, 48-year-old Frank A. Skeens Jr. of Lebanon, and the pickup's driver, 30-year-old Trevor Blankenship of Lebanon, died at the scene. The third driver, 27-year-old Kenterrious L. Christian of Taylor, South Carolina, died while being taken to a hospital.
