Police Investigating String of Car Break-Ins

Dec. 10, 2013

Charlottesville police are investigating overnight break-ins of cars in two separate neighborhoods within the city.

Police believe the car larcenies in the Fry's Spring and Rugby Road areas are unrelated, but say they the larcenies appear to be crimes of opportunity.

On Sunset Road, two residents say they noticed their cars had been opened sometime in the overnight hours.

"This morning I woke up to go to work and my truck door had been opened. Left open for however long and it was ransacked, kind of rummaged through," said Nam Nguyen.

Neither Nguyen nor the other victim believes anything was taken from their vehicles.

Police are also investigating a series of car larcenies in the Westview area of Rugby Road. Police believe the perpetrators walked through both areas taking advantage of unlocked doors. Nguyen says he left his car unlocked overnight.

"I'm not going to leave it unlocked anymore so, lesson learned," Nguyen said.

Police are encouraging everyone to lock their cars, so no one has the opportunity to break in.
