Police: Man Breaks into Apartment with Intent to Commit Rape

A Sterling man has been arrested in Charlottesville for allegedly breaking and entering into an apartment near the University of Virginia with the intent to commit rape.

Police say 23-year-old Edwin Guzman was arrested this week on thecharge.

Police say shortly before 3 a.m. on Thursday, Guzman entered an apartment on the 1200-block of Wertland Street. A woman inside the apartment woke up, found Guzman next to her bed and screamed.

Guzman fled the scene and the woman was not injured. He was arrested later that evening.

Guzman is a registered sex offender who was in Charlottesville to visit family. He's being held at the Charlottesville-Albemarle Regional Jail.
