Police Say Fatal Crash at Va. Checkpoint Suspicious

May 28, 2013

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - A fatal wreck at a sobriety checkpoint on U.S. 460 is being investigated as suspicious.

Virginia State Police First Sgt. Michael Bailey says a vehicle driven by 25-year-old Emerson Evans of Barboursville was traveling about 50 miles per hour when it hit the rear of a pickup truck at the checkpoint near the Campbell County-Bedford County line. Evans was killed in the accident.

Bailey tells The News & Advance that "external situations" might have contributed to the wreck. He said these situations weren't medical, but he declined to comment further.

Bailey says Evan's vehicle hit a guardrail several times before it hit the truck, which had slowed for the checkpoint.

The driver of the pickup truck and his wife suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The accident occurred Friday.
