UPDATE: Judge Denies Request for Private Investigator

September 20, 2011

An Albemarle County man, who allegedly admitted he shot his girlfriend in the neck, was back in court Tuesday. The gunshot wound partially paralyzed the female victim.

During the court session, a judge denied a request by the lawyers of John Welsey Morris. His lawyers wanted the court to pay for a private investigator. They said they needed a private investigator to properly defend their client.

53 year old John Welsey Morris was arrested in March.

At the time of the alleged shooting, he was on parole, after serving time for a 1985 murder.

A grand jury in Albemarle County indicted John Wesley Morris Monday morning. He is accused of shooting his girlfriend in the neck back in March.

Morris, 53, has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm after having been convicted of a felony.

His trial has been scheduled for September.

Morris' alleged victim testified that the two had argued about his drinking, which was a contentious subject. She claimed her boyfriend pinned her to a bed and said, "Both of us are going to die tonight and you're going to go first." She recalled feeling something cold against her neck and soon realize she had been shot and could barely move.

Albemarle County Police Officer Tim Seitz also testified that Morris, during an interview after his arrest on March 27, admitted to shooting his girlfriend.

The female victim, whose identity is not being revealed due to the nature of the crime, is paralyzed from the waist up on her right side.

Morris was released from jail in 2008 after serving 22 years in prison for double homicide in Albemarle County. He was sentenced to 46 years in jail after being found guilty of killing Ricky Clements and Monte Wanless in 1985.
