Public Meeting Being Held to Discuss Albemarle Co. Firearm Training Center

May 22, 2014

Albemarle County is asking for public input on a new firearms training center.

The county is working to develop a regional firearms training center on Milton Road in eastern Albemarle Co.

The construction will be funded through a partnership between Albemarle Co., the City of Charlottesville, and the University of Virginia as all three police forces will use the facility.

Supporters say, there's a demand to have the facility close to home.

"We can better train our officers and not have to send then offsite to go get training," says Albemarle Co. Supervisor Ken Boyd. "Right now we have to send them far away to get the training they need, and that puts a real demand issue on us. If we were to have an event or something while a big portion of them were out of town it could really put us in a dire situation."

There will be a community meeting regarding the new training center at the East Rivanna Volunteer Fire Company from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 22.
