Sept. 20, 2013
September 23rd marks the beginning of Rabies Awareness Week in the Commonwealth.
Health department officials are encouraging Virginians to take precautions against the disease.
Between January 2012 and September 2013, over 1,000 animal exposures were reported and investigated by health department officials in the Thomas Jefferson Health District. Twenty-eight animals tested positive for the virus, while 135 people have received a vaccine after being exposed to rabies.
Officials remind you to vaccinate all pets, and not to approach wild animals.
If you see any animal acting strangely, report it to animal control officers.
