Remains Found in Search for Va. Hiker to be Tested

April 21, 2013

STAUNTON, Va. (AP) - Bone fragments found during a search for a missing Staunton hiker will be tested to determine whether they're human.

If the test indicates the remains are human, Augusta County Sheriff Randy Fisher tells The Daily News Leader that a forensic team would be sent to the site where they were found.

Sixty-year-old Bobby Fitzgerald was last seen on Nov. 12, 2012. His vehicle was found near the Confederate Breastworks Trail on Shenandoah Mountain. Police say he dropped his cell phone in that area while hiking Nov. 11 and returned the next day to find it.

Several searches have been conducted on the mountain. On Saturday, searchers found the bone fragments, along with clothing and a shoe, north of the trailhead.
