A Ruckersville hair salon made a special cut to donate to Locks of Love to help those with cancer. It's all in memory of the former salon owner, a friend and mother: Brenda Gentry.

Twelve whole inches of healthy, curly, brown hair was donated to locks of love on Saturday at Tresses Hair and Tanning Studio in Ruckersville.

But the 12-inches came from the head of Joe Sanford, an athletic trainer who chopped his hair off in memory of Gentry, who died of cancer one year ago Saturday.

"One thing she always liked was my long hair, so I felt like that was a way to kind of make her smile, soI hope I did that today," Sanford said.

He met Brenda after she was diagnosed through working with her son, Jordan Gentry, who was a star baseball player at William Monroe High School.

Jordan says she is smiling as she looks down on her kids and the salon, one year later.

"Oh she's she's happy. I mean both of her kids are happy, her husband is happy and the shop's happy, so that's what she cared about the most," Gentry said.

Brenda owned Tresses Hair and Beauty Salon before she passed and it reopened in October with a new owner.

"I kept this name Tresses in memory of Brenda, for Brianna and Jordan. We just want to keep it running and hopefully have a successful business like Brenda did," said Lisa Morris, the new owner of Tresses.

It's been a tough year but since the salon reopened, even with new employees, it's been a new family for Jordan and Brianna Gentry.

"A lot of good memories, is the biggest thing. The memories," Jordan said.

Sanford made his cut on Saturday but Tresses is registered as a Locks of Love salon for any customer to donate at any time.
