A new report out by Transportation for America shows that 1,251 bridges out of the nearly 14,000 in Virginia were found to be deficient in their latest inspections. In 2011, the report found 1,272 deficient bridges in the Commonwealth.
That means 21 bridges have been repaired or are under repair in Virginia. That is better than average, but still not great.
One such bridge is the McCormick Road Bridge on UVa grounds. The bridge was closed last month to start a half a million dollar replacement project.
Construction is expected to finish in late July so the bridge can open back up to traffic.
The report says that Virginia ranked 31st when it comes to deficient bridges and that most states made positive improvements since the last mass bridge inspection.
