Traffic problems aside, the Route 250 Interchange project is moving along on time and on budget.

Officials say the work started with clearing and continued with grading, but now activity is picking up at McIntire Road's intersection with the Route 250 Bypass.

"We are trying to to keep out of the peak travel hours to avoid impacts to the public," said Jeanette Janiczek of Charlottesville's Neighborhood Development Services.

The construction of the new interchange has created random lane and road closures the past few months, and Janiczek says that wont change in the near future.

"Over the summer months, it's largely what you're going to be seeing out here today, so it's going to be the utility work and it's going to be the grading."

Julie Bernstein calls it "the new normal." She lives on Hillcrest Road, the street that's been closed off since the construction began.

Bernstein, a musician who records in a home studio, says her family has traded the sounds of chirping birds for beeping trucks.

"I'm a musician, so we do a lot of recording in our home. A lot of filming, recording rehearsals," she said. "We have these big trucks and lots of beeps. So it's like record, stop, record."

She says the blasting technique used to break up rocks to put in a new sewer line was the worst.

"When the blasting was taking place, it really felt like an earthquake," Bernstein said, but she acknowledged the work needs to be done.

The work on the actual bridge itself on Route 250 might not start for another six months. Overall, the project is expected to take another two years with a budget of about $35 million.
