May is National Foster Care Month. As a part of the month, an event in Charlottesville raised awareness of the need for and impact of foster care parents.

The Central Virginia Adoption Awareness Coalition put on a ribbon tying event on the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville.

There are more than 4,000 children in Virginia's foster care system and 221 children in or around Charlottesville are currently in foster care.

The group tied 221 ribons to trees to represent those children.

Kathy Doby, a former foster care parent who spoke at the event, said opening your home to a foster child is worth it.

"{I} really wanted to just try and make a difference in the life of a child and never dreamed about how much we would receive back. Just the love and just how this child had kind of wrapped around our heart," said Doby.

Doby said that, through foster parenting she realized that she didn't need to do a lot to be a good foster parent.

"We're so busy and sometimes we forget about the simple things, and we learned that the simple things for a child whose world has been turned upside down, those are things that mean a lot. So, a meal at a table, reading books...what we found is those simple things became big things."

If you are interested in being a foster care parent, several local agencies make up the Central Virginia Adoption Awareness Coalition and can help you become a foster care parent. They are: Albemarle County Social Services; Charlottesville Social Services; Community Attention Foster Families; Depaul Community Resources; People, Places, Inc.; and United Methodist Family Resources.
