Richmond Battlefield Launches Civil War Series

May 25, 2013

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Starting this weekend, Richmond National Battlefield Park will explore a different aspect of the Civil War from a central Virginia perspective.

The first program Saturday is on the Gaines' Mill Battlefield in suburban Richmond. The program will examine Robert E. Lee's first command victory at the 1862 battle land the civilians whose farms became battlefields.

Other programs through the summer will look at the Union navy's failed effort to reach the former capital of the Confederacy, the city's bread riots, the African-American experience in Hanover and Henrico counties and the role of rail in the war.

The programs will be conducted by park rangers.
