In Albemarle County, four seats are up for grabs on the Board of Supervisors including the seat for the Rio District.
Rodney Thomas is currently holding the Rio District seat and he believes he has the most experience and is still the best person for the job.
“I know a lot about county government, I know a lot about how it operates,” says Thomas (R). “I know all of the employees, I knew them when I came on as a board member and it made it much easier.”
He is also operating on a zero-based budget, keeping taxes low for businesses. Thomas’ main focus continues to be on transportation.
“We don't have enough roads to move the cars around, but it needs to be done in a planned way, better than we have done in the past,” says Thomas.
Thomas is running against Democrat Brad Sheffield, who believes his transportation and land use back ground will help with county issues.
“They want to see someone who has the experiences and those technical skills to really address the problems we have in the community,” says Sheffield.
He is also stressing the importance of data on the John Warner Parkway project.
“We're estimating what the impact is going to be with the John Warner Parkway, but we need to have real data right now so that when that parkway opens up we will know what the impact is going to be.”
Both Sheffield and Thomas see a lot of potential in the Rio District and they both hope to develop the commercial areas allowing Albemarle Co. to grow.
Sheffield says, “If there is any district that can really be embraced and made into a better area for people to live and work and even retire, it's the Rio District.”
