Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) have closed the bridge on Dry Bridge Road in Albemarle County.
The bridge spans the Buckingham Branch Railroad, and is located near Route 250 in Ivy.
VDOT workers will remove the existing one-lane bridge, and replace it with a two-lane bridge that can handle heavier loads. There will also be a four-foot, paved shoulder for pedestrians on both sides.
Dry Bridge Road is expected to be closed at the bridge for about a year.
