Road Preps Underway Ahead of Winter Weather

December 28, 2012

A mix of ice and snow could make roads treacherous overnight Friday. Officials with VDOT are preparing for the worst.

"We will have crews out, likely beginning at midnight, with trucks ready," said Stacy Londrey, a VDOT spokesperson. "We are preparing the trucks today, they will be fully stocked with the salt and sand and other abrasives we use and the plows will be attached so they are ready to go."

In Charlottesville, the roads were treated on Tuesday and again on Friday afternoon. "It's pretty standard preparation," said Miriam Dickler, the director of communications for the City of Charlottesville. "The streets have been brined with a solution that has salt in it to keep the roads from becoming to icy and snow trucks are prepped, should we need to go out and plow."

Even with all of the prep work being done to keep the roads safe, officials say drivers are advised to stay home.

"If travel is necessary we ask that you check the 511 Virginia website or the 511 mobile app just to find out what conditions are like where you are at and where you are headed to, especially if you are traveling across the state," Londrey said.
