A popular convenience store has closed to make way for a bustling new business in Albemarle County.
The 7-Eleven store on Route 29 and Hydraulic Road is now closed, a sign that the Shops at Stonefield are one step closer to reality. For years, the store has been surrounded by overgrown weeds and abandoned parking lots.
The Shops at Stonefield will soon fill that location. The shopping center, once known as Albemarle Place, will feature 270,000 square feet of retail space, a 135-room hotel and a mix of residential properties. County supervisors have said it's an exiciting project that will bring a lot of revenue to Albemarle County.
It's a project that's been a long time coming, and developers have announced that groundbreaking will take place later this spring.
The 7-Eleven may move down the street. Earlier this year, Tiger Fuels announced a deal with 7-Eleven is in the works, in which Tiger will lease two of its Market stores to the convenience store chains. Tiger will maintain ownership of the stores, while the name and brand will be 7-Eleven.
The Market at the intersection of Route 29 and Greenbrier drive is one of the locations that may become a 7-Eleven.
