Market Central, the non-profit that supports the Charlottesville City Market, kicked off a Friends of the Market campaign Saturday as they also start spreading the word about a way those on food stamps can stay healthy and give back to local farms.

For so many people, Saturday means going to the Charlottesville City Market.

Elsa Spencer is a SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), or food stamp, recipient but that doesn't stop her from getting her city market fix and staying healthy.

"I'd rather spend it here for sure it just keeps the money more in the hands of the people growing it and producing it and I like that," Spencer, a Charlottesville resident, said.

Wholesome Wave is a company partnering with local farmers markets around the country to match the SNAP money Elsa and others spend getting double the amount of tokens to spend at the market.

"For people to have access, you know, to not be locked out of buying good, healthy, local food just because they have limited means," said Eric Betthauser, a Market Central board member.

Betthauser and the rest of the board are starting an outreach program so everyone in the community who needs to know about the SNAP exchange at the city market can take advantage of it.

"It's become really popular for people of all stripes and socioeconomic classes and it's just a really wonderful program," said Betthauser. "It also puts money right back to the local farms and local economy which we really support."

By reaching out, Market Central hopes everyone can enjoy all the local eats they want, at the market they love right in Charlottesville.

Market Central received nearly $300 in donations on their first day of the Friends of the Market campaign kick-off on Saturday.
