New crash test results are out from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Six of the 12 small cars tested by the IIHS did well in front-end crashes, but some popular models fared poorly.
Only the Honda Civic earned the top rating of "Good" in the tests done by the institute.
The Dodge Dart, Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra and the 2014 Scion TC got "Acceptable" ratings.
Popular models, such as the Chevrolet Cruze and Sonic and the Volkswagen Beetle got "Marginal".
The 2014 Kia Forte was the worst performer of the group.
This is the first time that small cars have been subjected to a front crash that mimics a crash where just the front corner of a vehicle hits another object.
Research shows this crash situation accounts for about one-quarter of serious injuries.
