On Saturday, volunteers for the Salvation Army were ringing the bell at the Barracks Road Shopping Center.

Members of the Charlottesville Volunteer Fire Company came out to help ring the Salvation Army bell in front of Barnes and Noble at the shopping center.

This marks the 60th year that the volunteer fire company helped ring the donation bell for the Salvation Army.

Former UVa basketball coach Pete Gillen was also out helping ring the bell and raise money for those in need.

"We're trying to help out the Salvation Army," Gillen said. "All of the money stays here in the commonwealth to help the poor and the needy. So, I'm glad to do it."

Joe Levaca, a volunteer with the Salvation Army, is also happy to help raise money this holiday season.

"I do this because I enjoy doing it," Levaca said. "We're helping out the poor people and giving back to the community. It's a great community, Charlottesville."

The goal of today's donation drive was to raise a $1,000. Instead, the Salvation Army with the help of the volunteer fire company raised $1,500.

Since they reached their goal, an anonymous source has agreed to match that amount.
