Albemarle County School plan to install three small cameras on every county bus, and its not to monitor the students.
"We've know that there's been a problem with vehicles not stopping for school buses." says William Deane with Albemarle County Public Schools Transportation.
When a school bus is stopped and its stop sign is extended, drivers coming up from behind and in the other lanes are suppose to stop, but they don't always do. This can endanger children who are getting on and off the bus and need to cross the street to do so.
To help combat this, Albemarle Schools is conducting a test camera program with three of their buses.
"One of them is filming the stop sign itself and the other two are looking at each other down the length of the bus to see the front and back of any vehicles that might be passing by." says Deane
Parents who have students in the county say this is a big problem. One mother tells us she has even yelled at a driver who she saw pass a bus.
"The front line for this has certainly been our bus drivers, but certainly parents call when they see these violations occur." say Dean, who added, "...other motorists call when they see it happen saying what can we do how can we help."
However, some say the cameras bring up financial and privacy issues. Deane says this doesn't outweigh the safety concerns.
"We're protecting the privacy of those who are complying with the law but at the same time we are able to keep our kids safe and that there are consequences for putting our students in jeopardy."
Albemarle County School says they have not decided wether or not they will go forward with the planned cameras, but that if they do, they hope to have them all installed by next fall.
