It has been more than a week since someone last reported seeing a service dog missing in Albemarle County. Those looking for the dog say they are growing frustrated.
With no new leads to work with, trainers from Service Dogs by Warren Retrievers retraced their steps Tuesday afternoon, combing the area Beta, a female black lab, apparently ran away.
"We start here every day and go from here and search the surrounding areas and expand it out, but this is pretty much where we are, and it's frustrating," said lead trainer Cheri Campbell.
The organization says the trainer, who no longer works for them, says she lost the 45-pound black lab off Steubin Lane in the Key West neighborhood on March 9. The diabetic alert dog was unleashed when it was spooked by horses and took off.
Campbell says they will continue to scour the area, but, without any more information, they don't know where to look next.
"We're doing everything we know to do, and that's where we're at right now, hoping for somebody to say, 'Hey, I think I saw your dog,' and of course we'll go running, we'll flood the area," said Campbell. "But right now, with there being no sightings, we can only continue to flood the area she was last seen in."
Beta monitors the blood sugar levels of an 11-year-old girl in Texas. The dog was brought back to central Virginia for additional training when she disappeared.
Beta has an AVID microchip. She might be wearing a bright green service vest with dog tags.
