A farmhand, lost in the woods and injured. That was the scenario presented to search and rescue teams from local law enforcement agencies. The search and rescue simulation began Friday night in Fluvanna County.

Officers with the Fluvanna, Greene, and Albemarle County Sheriff's Department all working together on the rescue mission. Deputies used a helicopter to get an eye in the sky.

"Once you get above the tree line, you get a whole different visual of what's happening," said Reserve Deputy James O'Kelley with the Albemarle County Sheriff's Department.

On the ground, dozens of volunteers fanned out on foot to help with the search.

"We're trying to bring multiple jurisdictions together so we are able to practice and learn what each one can bring to the table in case we have an actual search," said Chief Deputy Bobby Shiflett.

The organized search marks the end of a year-long training period for the law enforcement officers.

"We want to be in a position that if this does happen, hopefully we will be able to locate them quickly and they can return safely," said Sheriff Ryant Washington, of Fluvanna County.

The simulated search will continue through Friday night and conclude Saturday afternoon.
