Toys, clothes, and shoes were just a few of the items families tossed into their carts during this year's Shop with a Cop event.
Members of the Greene County Sheriff's Department, as well as a few Virginia state troopers, helped families shop for Christmas gifts at Walmart in Ruckersville.
Marika Rush is a single mother of two and was struggling with buying Christmas gifts this year until now.
“My job just wasn't offering the hours that I needed to provide Christmas for my children,” says Rush. “I got a phone call saying that there was a program and that my children were put on the list, so now we're here.”
Now, her two children will have a blessed Christmas thanks to the money raised by the sheriff's department
“We raise money every year through our Major Russell Lane Memorial Golf Tournament and all of the proceeds from that go to this shop with a cop program,” Greene County sheriff Steve Smith said. “Some of these families wouldn't have a very good Christmas without this program, and we feel like we need to try to help them any way we can.”
This year, they raised $20,000 dollars during the tournament and providing $100 dollars each to 45 children to shop until they drop.
“I got Battleship and a Duck Dynasty pillow, a Duck Dynasty calendar, a Duck Dynasty shirt,” says Kenya Lemon, a true Duck Dynasty fan.
There were many items on her Christmas list this year and Lemon is happy to be able to get all of them.
