Shoppers Head Out for Round Two of Bargains

November 23, 2012

Bargain hunters battled the crowds on Black Friday, but by the time Friday rolled around, for some shoppers, it was already round two. Holiday shoppers hoping to score a deal got a head start this year, as more stores opened their checkout lanes a day early.

"Things were different this year because they had the sales going on last night," said Lynchburg resident Phil Mazzie.

The crowds set out for what has become known as Gray Thursday, which had them racing to cash registers earlier than ever. Some people said the early start took its toll on some of the shoppers.

"People were a lot crankier this morning than usual because not only were they out this morning, they were out last night," said Mazzie. "People were a lot moodier."

But the early start seemed to lessen the crowds on Friday.

"There are still a lot of shoppers," Ruckersville resident Paula Mawyer said of the afternoon rush. "But they're thinning down some."

K-Mart on Hydraulic Road in Charlottesville opened its doors at 8:00 p.m. Thursday. The assistant store manager said they didn't know what to expect because they have never started their Black Friday deals that early. After a slight dip in the late morning, a second wave of shoppers filled the store after noon.
