Siips Wine and Champagne Bar is closing its doors after Sunday, Feb. 19, according to an email sent by owner George Benford's wife, Patty.
The Downtown Mall restaurant has been purchased by an unnamed local restaurant owner who has plans to re-open it as a upscale supper club in the spring.
Since Siips' wine inventory was not part of the sale, Benford says they will be selling wine by the glass at deep discounts starting this weekend.
"We want to thank you for all your support and friendship over the last four years. We also want to thank all our employees for all their hard work and the family atmosphere they helped us create," the email stated.
The restaurant's schedule for weekend entertainment and Valentine's Day Dinner will remain the same until it closes.

I don't think the comments are harsh. Siips was a poor execution of a decent concept. It didn't have food that appealed to people. The place gave you a sense of schizophrenia when you went in there because it had so many goofing things going on that had nothing to do with wine or food. It was a fantastic location highly underutilized. The Mall will be better with what replaces it.
What about Long John Silvers on 29? They are now closed and I never saw a thing about it online or in the paper. A travesty.......
To everyone with a harsh comment above, I would like to see YOU try and run a restaurant. Let's see how you deal with idiots like yourselves on a daily basis. As a very close downtown neighbor of Siips we always felt their presence to be joyful. George and his wife were a pleasant addition to the downtown mall as well as contributors to the DBAC. And btw, the homeless are most likely crack addicts, not alcoholics. Urntil the haven is gone, they will be the only ones occupying the crumbling Landmark hotel
