Sky-High Ticket Prices for Sweet 16 Game

March 28, 2014

It’s madness at Madison Square Garden, where ticket prices are making it difficult for University of Virginia fans to cheer on their team in tonight’s Sweet 16 game.

It’s the hottest ticket in town. The Virginia Cavaliers tip off against the Michigan State Spartans at 10 p.m. tonight, and for many in New York City, getting a ticket wasn’t easy.

“I looked it up, and they were about $600,” said Kevin Scott, a Cavalier fan. “So it was either pay rent this month or see them play. Unfortunately I needed a place to live more than I needed to see them, so I’ll be watching on TV.

Ticket prices to see UVa. play in the Sweet 16 game at Madison Square Garden keep climbing. They are more than triple the price of other regional tournaments this weekend, and more expensive than tickets to the NCAA Final Four and even the national championship.

“Ticket prices are out of control,” UVa. alum Willie Dersch said. “It’s good to know people at this time.”

“Tickets have been hard to come by, as everyone has been talking about. But luckily we did come up with some tickets,” says Tien-Tsin Huang, UVa. alum. “Unfortunately the kids won’t be able to make it, but the parents will be there.”

Some Cavalier fans say they will stay home for this round of games, and save up for next weekend.

“I’m so confident I have tickets to the Final Four and championship in Dallas,” said Gretel Truong, UVa. alum. “I’m super excited about that.”

For those who didn’t want to shell out the big bucks to buy a ticket, they say they are watching the game with other UVa. fans at bars nearby.
