Close to 2,500 people passed through the doors of the new Martha Jefferson Hospital on Sunday. They entered as visitors to tour the new facility during an open house.

"It's more like a hotel. You walk down the corridor and the doors are closed and we commented that it look like a hotel door," said Judy Lynn.

Heidi Wolfe visited the birthing rooms and said, "As someone who wants to have a family in the future, I would definitely come here."

Hospital representatives say not only is clinical care important but the environment is too. The interior concept, including the floors and the walls, was designed with the patient in mind.

"There is a lot of evidence-based design out there that shows us that access to nature, access to more natural light and access to color helps in the healing process." said Barbra Elias, director of the replacement hospital project.

Martha Jefferson has already started to move smaller departments into the new facility. The initial plan for the nearly $300 million facility started in 2000.

"It's been a long process so we're thrilled that is coming to fruition," Elias said.

The facility officially opens its doors on August 28.
