A special exhibit opened Friday afternoon at the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection at the University of Virginia.
It features works by contemporary Aboriginal artist Vernon Ah Kee. The collection of drawings, titled "ill-like", explores issues of race and racially motivated violence in conjunction with Martin Luther King, Jr.‘s birthday and Black History Month in February.
"We see a lot of similarities between the situation of the Colonial government of Australia and the indigenous people there and African Americans here in the United States," said Director Margo Smith.
Kee is a member of the Kuku Yalandji, Waanyi, Yidinjii and Gugu Timithirr peoples. He is known for his candid explorations of contemporary and historical mistreatment of Aboriginal people in Australia.
The exhibition will run until Apr. 8.
