A suspect is in custody after a nine-hour standoff with police at a home on Clark Court in Lake Monticello.
The standoff ended around 1 a.m. Saturday when officers entered the home to arrest 23-year-old James Kardos of Charlottesville. Police tell us they decided to enter the home after communications broke down.
At one point, police say Kardos fired one gunshot, but nobody was injured. Shortly later a much larger boom echoed through the neighborhood, sources say that noise was a flashbang grenade.
According to police sources, officers delivered beer and cigarettes to the home, twice trying to taser the suspect. Those efforts apparently failed both times.
Police evacuated residents along Clark Drive out of their homes Friday afternoon. A shelter established at the community clubhouse remained empty, as those affected chose to stay with friends or family members.
Neighbors reported police in tactical gear swarming the neighborhood, taking cover.
Police tell us the incident started in Charlottesville when the suspect assaulted a woman along Sheridan Avenue shortly before 3 p.m. Friday. The victim was taken to a hospital for injuries. Charlottesville Police tell us assault charges will be filed.
We're told the suspect then drove to his mother's home at Lake Monticello.
