State Grant Awarded to Charlottesville's Literacy Volunteers

August 20, 2013

A group that helps people learn English for free is getting a $42,000 boost from the state.

Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville Albemarle learned Wednesday that they qualified for the state grant.

The organization plans to use the money to buy more supplies, pay rent, and pay staff.

Nearly 300 students from dozens of different countries benefit from Literacy Volunteers.

“These days you need English to get around and get a job and be successful in the workplace, and that's what most of our students are learning English for,” says Ellen Osborne with Literacy Volunteers. “They want to fit in and they've come to this country for whatever reason. They want to fit in they want to speak the language. They want to learn our culture and our customs.”

The organization provides tutoring in basic literacy and English as a second language to adults living or working in Charlottesville and Albemarle County.

The next training session for new tutors is Saturday, September 14 at the Jefferson School City Center.
