Statements from Va. Officials on Sen. Deeds

Politicians and other officials across Virginia are releasing statements on Senator Creigh Deeds.

The senator was assaulted early Tuesday, and is being treated for multiple stab wounds.

- Governor Bob McDonnell:

“In this tough and sad time, our thoughts and prayers are with the Deeds family. The news from this morning is utterly heartbreaking. Creigh Deeds is an exceptional and committed public servant who has always done what he believes is best for Virginia and who gives his all to public service. He cares deeply about Virginia, and the people of Virginia care deeply for him. I urge all Virginians today to join me in praying for a full and complete recovery for Creigh and for many more years of his public service to the Commonwealth. At this moment, our state unites in prayer for Creigh Deeds and his family.”

- Governor-elect Terry McAuliffe:

“Dorothy and I are praying for Senator Creigh Deeds and his family in the wake of this awful tragedy. This is a truly sad day for Virginia and for the many people who know Creigh as the fine public servant and friend he is. We join people across the Commonwealth and country in wishing him a full recovery.”

- Lt. Governor Bill Bolling:

“My thoughts and prayers are with Creigh Deeds and his family.”

- Senator Tim Kaine:

"Praying for Creigh's recovery. My thoughts & prayers are with his family."

- Senator Mark Warner:

"Stunning news from Bath County. I am praying for Creigh Deeds and his family at this very, very difficult time."

- Congressman Robert Hurt:

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Creigh Deeds at this difficult time.”

-Delegate Rob Bell

"I've worked with Creigh here in Albemarle more than a decade, and this is an unthinkable tragedy. Our prayers go out to him and his family."

- Delegate David Toscano:

"Senator Creigh Deeds is in critical condition at the UVA Hospital. He is being closely monitored and is in intensive care. This is a terrible tragedy. Senator Deeds was very close to his son Gus, and has taken herculean efforts to help him over the years. Our thoughts and prayers are with Creigh and the family at this difficult time."

- Albemarle Co. Sheriff Chip Harding:

"I've known Creigh Deeds for quite a while now, and he's certainly well known throughout Virginia... We're all just in shock, everyone I've talked to, the news is just getting out about his injuries, and certainly our prayers go out to he and his family."

- Senate Democratic Leader Dick Saslaw:

"Since coming to the General Assembly, Creigh Deeds has been a big asset to the legislature. This is a tragedy that no family should have to go through. Our thoughts and prayers are for a full and speedy recovery."

-Senate Democratic Caucus Chair Donald McEachin:

"My thougts and prayers are with my good friend Creigh and his family in this terrible, heartbreaking time. We all pray for his complete recovery and that he and his family may find some peace and comfort in their future."

-Speaker William J. Howell:

"Cessie and I would like to extend our sincerest thoughts and prayers to Senator Creigh Deeds and his family. This is a tragic incident and something no one could ever imagine. We are thinking and praying for Creigh at this time."

-Attorney General candidate Mark Herring:

Creigh has always been a fighter and a tireless advocate on behalf of Virginia families and on behalf of our Commonwealth that he loves so dearly.
