Statewide Tornado Drills Raise Awareness

March 12, 2013

The National Weather Service and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management are helping you get prepared in the event of a tornado.

A drill took place Tuesday morning to raise awareness of the dangers involved with a Tornado.

Students at Venable Elementary School in Charlottesville took part in the drill.

It's important to know that a "Tornado Watch" means that the weather is right for tornado formation.
A "Tornado Warning" means one has been sighted in the area and you should find shelter immediately.

"It is best to be inside a sturdy building at the lowest level possible and away from windows," said Emergency Management Coordinator Kirby Felts. "You are trying to protect yourself from the debris that gets blown around from the storm and things that are getting knocked down."

In the past two years, there has been 62 tornadoes in Virginia.

Ten people have been killed, more than a hundred injured and dozens of homes and businesses destroyed.
